PRIVATE BRAND

“TUGU”

“Kurume Kasuri” is a type of fabric woven by a very traditional technique in the city of Kurume of Fukuoka, Japan. It uses two threads dyed in different colors,

usually indigo and white, and is woven together to make beautiful Japanese patterns. A tradition continuing for over 200 years, it was claimed by the Japanese government as a technique with high historic and artistic value in 1957.

“Kurume Kasuri” making is very complicated, involving 30 steps in total, which makes small leftover threads inevitable. In order to keep these leftover threads from wasting, we at Sakata Textile Company wove each piece of thread together by hand, and came up with a very soft, yet strong fabric. That is how our brand “TUGU” came to be.

The Japanese word “TUGU” has two meanings, to inherit and to spin yarn. Through our brand name we express how the leftover threads that were once thrown away are woven together, succeeding itself as new fabric on its own. Taking a tradition of more than 200 years, “TUGU” passes it down to become eco-friendly products to be beloved by generations to come.
